Educational programme with early music. Teacher and Pupil, part 1. This episode is centered around George Friedrich Händel and his teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow (1663-1712).

Zachow, organist of the Marienkirche in Halle (Händel’s place of birth), gave young Händel his first music lessons. He taught him to play instruments like the harpsichord, the organ and the violin and gave him composing lessons. Zachow wrote many organ works and cantatas, one of which can be heard in this programme. We also play some of the musical influence that Telemann had on Händel, particularly with opera and the French overture.
