Machaut was the most significant co
mposer of the 14th century and was an important link in the history of music. His poems are considered the most famous of his time as well. He was also a renowned scribe. At the end of his life, he had carefully collected, organised and published his own work. This makes him the first composer of whom all music has been preserved.
