Mariama Special: the Africa Festival Hertme (part 1); live, from the archives
We cast our gaze on the village of Hertze in the Dutch province of Twente. After a hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year on the 2nd and 3rd of July the famous Afrika Festival Hertme will once again place in the beautiful green ambiance of the local open-air theatre. Over the past 33 years, this festival has grown into the most prominent African music festival in Europe. The programming is always unique, surprising and of high quality. Numerous artists who performed at the event have gone on to become absolute world stars. Plus, there’s a lot to discover in the way of new and lesser-known artists and bands.

Responsible for the festival’s exciting programming is Rob Lokin, who recently launched his programme Mariama on the Concertzender, focusing on music from Cameroon. In this special two-hour edition of Mariama, he puts the Africa Festival in the spotlight. During the first hour, special live recordings of previous editions of the festival can be enjoyed, featuring artists that have not often been heard in the Netherlands. During the second hour, Rob looks ahead to the upcoming festival on 2 and 3 July.
