The History of Los Paraguayos.
Part 2 (of 8): The Trio
It has been more than 56 years since the coming of Los Paraguayos to the West brought about a real upheaval. The general interest in South American music, and music from Paraguay in particular, can be attributed to the coming of this ensemble.
Numerous other groups from the same country as well as other countries in South America found willing listeners in the Western audience. The Netherlands played a central part in this trio’s rise to fame (a quartet later, and even a quintet after that) seeing as Philips record company Phonogram, established in the Netherlands, did a lot to promote their music. Dutch people like André Smit and Melle Weersma contributed to that strongly. All of a sudden, South African music was an important part of our everyday musical fare, and ensembles were formed everywhere, including in the Netherlands (but also in places like Japan), who took over the repertoire of these musicians.
The Concertzender broadcasts an 8-part series about this widely known group in 1-hour programmes divided into different subjects.
Part 1: “The Overview”. In this, we will step through the history of Los Parguayos with seven-league strides, the transition from trio to quartet under Luis Alberto del Paraná’s leadership. And after his early death (he was only 48), the take-over of the group by his younger brother Reynaldo Meza.
Part 2 is exclusively about the ‘early’ trio entitled The Trio.
Part 3, the career of LUIS, Luis Alberto del Paraná y Su Trio Los Paraguayos (quintet later).
Part 4 is devoted exclusively to Los Paraguayos led by Luis Alberto’s younger brother Reynaldo Meza, so after 1974.
