Hawaiian Music (Part 15), Lani McIntire (2) “By Radio”

The Hawaiian Lani McInctire, the younger brother of the legendary steel guitarist Dick McIntire, was primarily a conductor and singer. He made a lot of collector’s items which sometimes can still be found. But he made even more radio broadcasts. In a time that the tape recorder still had to be invented, we are talking about the end of the 30s and the 40s and 50s, these records were recorded on a 16’’ (almost 41 cm) 33 rpm which included a program from about 12 until 13 minutes. These were then spread across America to all sorts of radio stations.  When they were no longer needed because of the advent of the tape recorder, these albums were shamelessly thrown away or destroyed. Luckily there are always enthusiasts and collectors who managed to save some of these records from destruction and took them on in their collection. Gerrit Venema, the secretary from the Stichting Hawaiianmuziek en -cultuur Nederland (Foundation for Hawaiian music- and culture in the Netherlands) gave your producer Henk Braaksma a stack of these albums, so 60 to 70 years old. But what do you do with it? A record player this size is not for sale anymore and our ‘culture defenders’ in Hilversum got rid of these players (!).
Lani McIntire.jpgAfter mediation of former colleague Wannes Dirven he knew to get record restorer Harry Kaster interested in transposing the records for the use of the Concertzender. Consider it a contribution to a good cause that the Concertzender with all of its volunteers pursue. It turns out that there are recordings from Lani McIntire in different compositions and under different names, such as Lani McIntire and His Hawaiian Orchestra, L.M. and His Quartet, L.M. and His Hawaiians en L.M. and His Orchestra. We also hear different singers and Hawaiian guitarists, because the recordings cover a rather long period.
You can listen to 5 units of 4 songs constantly in 4 different formations. These recordings which have never been published for sale, are now saved from oblivion. The expert will notice that the majority of the repertoire is still very popular by present-day Hawaiian ensembles and is still being used.
