Hawaiian Music Part 16: Al Kealoha Perry and His Singing Surfriders

Now the 16” records are also provided by Gerrit Venema, secretary of the Stichting Hawaii-muziek en –Cultuur in the Netherlands. Because they cannot be played in a normal way, we got help by former Concertzender employee Wannes Dirven, who on his turn ended up with record restorer Harry Coster. He unselfishly helped to make the records suitable for our programmes. This is the second part about Al Kealoha Perry and His Singing Surfriders. The first part was broadcast on 7 June 2012 and can still be listened back to at the Concertzender. These 16” records were used in the beginning of the 1940s and were put on commercial CDs by Australian Hawaii fan and restorer Bruce Clarke. Unfortunately these are completely unavailable after his death. Al Kealoha Perry is known worldwide by his conducting the legendary ‘Hawaii Calls’ radio programme, which existed 40 years, by Webley Edwards. In this weekly heard orchestra, the ‘hapa-haole’, English Hawaii music, was mainly presented, while at the same time Al Kealoha Perry with his Singing Surfriders performed the authentic Hawaiian songs in Hawaiian. And of catching quality and usually in up-tempo. Moreover, the ensemble had steel guitarist David Keli’i, to us he is one of the most unknown guitarist, but also one of the best. You are going to hear all of this in the coming programme.
