As a part of the programme ‘Free Radicals’ we will start today with ‘Under the Lemontree’: the first episode of a series of – natural(ly) – unbounded programmes with a focus on the concepts ‘atmosphere & flow’. Under the Lemontree takes the listener on a journey where, almost unnoticeable, style and genre are being swapped.
The first journey is going to be easy-going, mostly over dusty roads and perhaps with a slight touch of blues. It is all about the guitar which can come up viciously. We are going to the city with a soundtrack of the movie ‘The Hot Spot’, on which jazz celebrity Miles David collaborated. Stevie Ray Vaughan, the intended successor of Jimi Hendrix, plays a lazy blues and takes us to the toughest place in town. From America to Spain(Juan Cañizares) and Portugal (Rafael Toral), historically not even such a big step: flamenco versus experimental.
And when we talk about the end of the world, we come to Julee Cruise, who’d rather kiss in summer than cry in winter. And who wouldn’t? Jan Duindam is a(n almost forgotten) Dutch master of folk music. His LP/ CD ‘Thoughts’ is a rare and wanted collector’s item. From the Netherlands we travel to Mali and Ali Farka Toure’s world, no lack of blues there.
Next stop is Quebec, Canada: despite the title, Daniel Lanois gives us an almost meditative song. To pick up Polly at home we have go slower than slow but the surprising duet of (Led Zeppelin’s) Robert Plant and ‘bluegrass’ Alison Kraus is an excellent effort. René van Barneveld (born in Sourabaja) is the guitar player of Urban Dance Squad and he also dominates the soundtrack of the Dutch movie ‘Dead Souls’, under direction of Bram van Splunteren.
We end the journey in the Netherlands where Janne Schra sings about empty streets with traffic lights still working, on a rainy Friday night. From this point forward it can only go downhill…
