PAUL CHAMBERS and JOHN COLTRANE
In the autumn of 1955 trumpet player Miles Davis formed the quintet which quickly grew into the Hot Five of the fifties. The contribution which the sidemen had in the success of this quintet was just as big as that of Miles Davis himself resulting in the fact that John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones continually had to appear in the New York recording studios. John Coltrane made 12 albums under his own name for Prestige label in the short period of 18 months. It is remarkable that his youthful colleague from the Davis quintet, Paul Chambers, was the bass player on all those albums.
