KENNY DREW TRIO: the rhythm section on three classic Blue Note albums
The solid funky accompaniment of Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums) ensured that the title song of the album Blue Train (1957) contained the most glorious solo of the first period of John Coltrane. Dexter Gordon was also seduced by this daring rhythm section to formulate surprising explanations on his album Dexter Calling (1961). Trumpet player Kenny Dorham gratefully made use of these comforting qualities of this surprisingly solid occasional trio on the album Whistle Stop (1961) by which Whistle Stop took up a special place in the oeuvre of Kenny Dorham with its cheerful almost elated character.
