Saxophone player Billy Mitchell (1926-2001) succeeded colleague and power wind player Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis in the band of Count Basie in 1957. Would he manage? Early 1961 he left the Basie band with the colourful trombone player Al Grey to start their own quintet.
