Genre: Bebop
Composer: Quincy Jones

Alto saxophone player Jimmy Woods (part 2).
Jimmy Woods was born in St. Louis (Missouri) in 1934 and grew up in Seattle (Washington) from 1945. It is where he learned to play clarinet and saxophone. He played in a high school band together with Quincy Jones. He went on tour with (rhythm &) blues bands of Roy Milton, Big Maybelle and Jimmy Witherspoon. He settled in Los Angeles in 1958 because of gigs but also to study at the Los Angeles City College.
Especially on his own two albums (1962 and 1963) Jimmy Woods lets himself known as still an intriguing transitional figure: with a very expressive sound and staggering intervals he went beyond the boundaries of hard bop and banged on the gateway to a freer domain.
