Dutch Jazz on CD, compiled by Jan Verwey.

Theme: jazz pianists (part 3).

In the last episode of 2020, I will focus again on jazz pianists, of which there are many in our country. For now, this will be the last part, part three. I will start with perhaps the most famous in the Netherlands, and far beyond: Louis van Dijk, who, sadly, is not among us anymore. This trio record is 35 years old but still wonderful. Niels Henning Orsted Pederson, a bassist with a stunning technique, has a large share. A Dane who was flown over directly after a performance with pianist Oscar Peterson – who was on a tour in Scandinavia – to make a recording with master bassist Oscar Peterson in the USA. Leo Bouwmeester is perhaps not as well-known, even though he went on a tour with singer Deborah J Carter, even worldwide, and led sessions in the famous music cafe De Engelbewaarder in Amsterdam. Bassist Sanne van Delft and drummer Nout Ingen Housz play in the trio as well. Recorded and produced by Barry Olthof (OAP Records). Own compositions and standards alternate with each other on this beautiful album.

The following CD has the short title ’88’, referring to the number of keys of the grand piano that Michiel Borstlap plays, and not just him alone. He is a man who – mostly by himself – travels all around the world to give concerts. Many of the songs are his own on this album, and I will let you hear three of them. His regular trio peers are Boudewijn Lucas on double bass and Erik Kooger on drums. Released by Challenge Records.

Last but not least is pianist Rob van Bavel, who became known for playing in well-known jazz groups, of which the bands of saxophonist Piet Noordijk and drummer Eric Ineke were the most famous. This album also has a mixture of pieces from the realbook and compositions of the pianist, of which I will play two. Mark van Rooij plays the bass and Hans van Oosterhout plays the drums. This CD was recorded under own management in 1991.
