Hummel revisited

tue 6 jun 2017 19:00 hour

Episode XXX

1827. Hummel rushes over to Vienna, for he learns Beethoven is dying. He visits him a couple of times, sometimes with his wife, who Beethoven once fancied. At Beethoven’s massively attended funeral Hummel is one of the pallbearers. In Vienna he also hears and meets another composer who is unknown but to a limited few, who know his songs. He deeply moves Hummel. Hummel is brooding on going on an elaborate concert tour to Paris and London in 1830. For this reason, he composes many new works, like the ‘military’ septet with trumpet.  Military music was popular at the time, because people feared a wave of revolutions throughout the whole of Europe.
