A Sunday programme in the ‘baroque spirit’. ‘Vespro della Beata Vergine’ by 17th-century Milanese non Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, by ensemble Magnificat led by Warren Stewart.

40 years after Monteverdi wrote his Maria vespers, Benedictine non Chiara Margarita Cozzolani published her ‘Vespro della Beata Vergine’. She composed, just like other nuns in Santa Radegonda’s musical monastery in Milan, but Cozzolani also published 4 collections.
Cozzolani composed many pslams and motets, especially for Second Vespers for the Celebration of Annunciation. Of Cozzolanis 2 turned over collections from 1642 and 1650, a ‘Vespro della Beata Vergine’ was compiled, which can be heard here integrally.
For an encore you can hear the Magnificat from other Maria verspers, namely by an exact contemporary of Cozzolani: Pier Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676).
