L’Esprit Baroque

A Sunday programme in the ‘baroque spirit’. Satyr’s Musicke, a golden age of English instrumental music during the Commonwealth and the Restoration periods.

Early 17th-century England. In the Commonwealth period under Cromwell, from 1649 to 1660, public musical life had a low profile.
In the family circle, however, a lot of music could still be heard, it was a golden age for publications of music, and the tradition  of English Masque, intimate theatre music, stood firm.
There was a lot of improvising on music from various early and new sources, and a lot of dancing. The people wanted their monarchy back in 1660, which resulted in the Restoration. The public music life made a comeback, and the opera houses particularly went through a golden age.
Three special ensembles revive these golden times of instrumental music for a moment: Satyr’s Band, the Finnish baroque ensemble Battalia and La Beata Olanda.
