¡Mambo!

sat 4 feb 2023 14:00 hour

In the third episode of Mambo, attention is given to the history of the word “Salsa”. The story tells how the Mambo dance music became known as “salsa” in the 1970s.

One of the ingredients of Mambo is the son. In 1927, there was the first song about the hot sauce, the Salsa or Salsita. This was meant to make the music spicy. After the musical developments in New York in the early 1960s, with, among others, ‘the twist’ and the ‘bungaloo’, there was a revival of the classic Cuban Conjunto, an orchestra with a brass section.

In 1966, the Dominican Johnny Pacheco founded the record company Fania in New York. He went in search of young talent. Fania was a great stimulus for Latino music in New York City. Among young Puerto Ricans, there grew a sense of self-awareness. Mega concerts were held in the city in gigantic dance halls, where the musicians of the Fania label gave numerous performances.
