In the fourth episode of Mambo, we shine a spotlight on the famous record label “Fania”. It had a great influence on the flourishing of Latin music, not only in New York City but also in Latin America and Europe.
At the Fania record label, Reuben Blades from Panama quickly rose to the top of the company. He ensured that Fania gained international significance and wrote socially engaged lyrics.
At some point, the nightclubs in New York City that featured Fania stars began to charge too high entrance fees, causing the younger audience to stay away.
At the same time, Fania was taken over by a South American company. This happened under the influence of “salsa,” which had by now taken off outside of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New York. Due to this development, the quality of Fania music declined. What had made Fania so special was now marketed in diluted form as “salsa”.
