¡Mambo!

In this 6th episode of Mambo, the Cuban music genre “Charanga” takes center stage. This genre is a typical Cuban product that emerged from French chamber music and filled with African elements.

The first danzón was composed at the end of the 19th century through the group dance “contradanza.” This was the most popular dance for couples for many years. The addition of the “son” made this music danceable, and it is considered the essence of Cuba, its music par excellence.

The addition of the son took place around 1910. The danzón was thus not only dance music for the white elite, but for all Cubans. In the 1930s, Cachao and his brother Orestes began to experiment with danzón music, realizing an accent shift. Through the Africanization of the music, it became known as “Mambo,” the new dance music.

In the 1950s, “Charanga” became really popular, and in the 1960s, New York City was flooded with this music genre. There were also orchestras that called themselves “tipica,” and you’ll find out why in this 6th episode of Mambo.
