¡Mambo!

sat 1 apr 2023 14:00 hour

Today in the 7th episode of Mambo, we once again shine the spotlight on the Cuban music genre “Charanga”. Did you know, for example, that the musical heroes of the Buena Vista Social Club earned their stripes in Charanga groups?

In this episode, Mambo focuses on the more modern Charangas from the 80s and 90s. The most well-known dance band from Cuba, Los Van Van (photo), is featured, whose music is so overwhelming that many don’t realize it’s actually a Charanga.

Mambo also highlights the Charanga Habanera. This Cuban band has been rejuvenated to the point that the band members look like they come from the New York City subway. What’s striking is that they have left most of the instruments at home. Their sound is produced by electronics, while the vocals sound mostly like “rap”.
