¡Mambo!

sat 16 mar 2024 14:00 hour

Today in Mambo: episode one of two episodes on the importance of the flute in Latino music. Numerous renowned flutists will be featured this hour.

We will start off with a song by Cuban flutist and orchestra leader Antonio Arcaňo and his Maravillas. They perform a so-called “danzon,” one of the ingredients of popular Cuban dance music.

We will also listen to two songs by Cuban flutist Richard Egües (pictured above). Egües has been very important for the development of Cuban music. Interestingly, he played on a wooden flute without keys. Those models haven’t been made for a long time, but Cuban flutists had already developed a virtuoso way of playing with the old version.

In this 52nd edition of Mambo, you will also hear more renowned flutists such as Johnny Pacheco, Orlando Valle, and Carlos Avaroff.
