¡Mambo!

sat 23 mar 2024 14:00 hour

Today in Mambo: the second and last episode on the flute in Cuban music. This episode will feature renowned flutists.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the flute, along with the violin, arrived from Haiti to the eastern part of Cuba. French settlers fled newly independent Haiti, taking everything with them, including their musical instruments. Over time, Cubans managed to adapt these French instruments to their own musical ideas.

In the early 1960s, flutist José Fajardo (pictured above) moved from Cuba to New York City, and sparked a true ‘charanga’ craze there. We will feature him twice in the next hour: first together with the Cuban Jam Session and then with flutist Johnny Pacheco.

Of course, we will feature plenty of other flatino flutists, such as Eddy Zervigon and Pupi Legarreta. Enough reason to stay tuned for this 53rd edition of Mambo.
