¡Mambo!

sat 6 apr 2024 14:00 hour

In today’s episode of Mambo we will focus on the trombone in Cuban and Puerto Rican music.

We will kick off with trombonists Jesús Aguaje and the famous Ibrahim Ferrer, who perform a song from one of the Buena Vista albums together.

Trombones were sometimes present in Latin dance orchestras in the past but were typically kept in the background. Puerto Rican orchestra leader and trombonist Mon Rivera (pictured above) changed that. He transformed the trombone into a solo instrument, which has since gained its own place in Latin music.

You will also hear a Dutch trombonist David Rothschild perform. This musician lived and worked in New York and performed in several Latino orchestras.
