Today in Mambo, a new episode of the series on Puerto Rican musician Eddie Palmieri from New York.
Eddie had started his own orchestra at the age of 24, which did not dive into popular Cuban dance music alone, but also into experimental jazz.
In the 1960s there was much social movement among the Puerto Rican population during the struggle for more civil rights. This was reflected in Eddie Palmieri’s music, some of whose songs will be played this hour.
In the early 1970s, an album was released on which Eddie plays the electrical piano. This stemmed from the development of Cuban dance music in New York City. That type of music was commercially renamed ‘salsa’ a few years later.
