Today in Mambo, we will focus on Puerto Rican singer, composer and conductor Angel Canales from New York City.
Angel was born in Ponce, the second city of Puerto Rico. As a 10-year-old boy he moved to Brooklyn, New York City. He spent his entire childhood listening to Rafael Cortijo’s popular combo, of which Ismael Rivera was the singer, Puerto Rico’s most beloved vocalist. As such, the latter was Angel’s biggest role model.
In 1975, Angel took over the orchestra under the name ‘Sabor con Angel Canales’. ‘Sabor’ or ‘salsa’ were the genres used at the time to express the exciting quality of Cuban dance music.
In 1972, ‘salsa’, after a long hesitation, became the commercial term for that type of music. Angel never took a commercial approach, however, and therefore continued to operate under the name of “sabor”.
