Today in Mambo, the first episode of the 3-part series on Puerto Rican orchestra leader, percussionist and dancer Roberto Roena.
Roberto was born in Puerto Rico and began his artistic career as a dancer; he was also called the great dancer. At the age of 17, he already played the conga in the orchestra of Rafael Cortijo, who was just as important for latino music as Duke Ellington was for jazz.
In 1962, the combo of Rafael Cortijo fell apart. A part of it, among who Roberto Roena, continued as the band El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
In 1969, he left this music group to form his own orchestra: the Apollo Sound. With two or three trumpets, trombone, saxophone and a tight rhythm section, Roberto succeeded in creating a new music style. Their first record immediately became a hit. This hour, you will hear many songs by Roberto and his Apollo Sound.
