In this fourth episode of Mambo, it’s all about Latino musician Machito.
This Cuban-born New Yorker had a profound influence on the city’s jazz scene. He was already touring Europe and Japan long before Latin music gained mainstream popularity. In the early 1950s, Charlie Parker had already performed with Machito’s orchestra. Later, alto saxophonist Frank Morgan also joined him for a collaboration. He blended bebop with Afro-Cuban influences, and together with the rhythm section of Machito’s orchestra, they created an amazing sound. Machito died in 1984, after a tour in the Netherlands and London. He was 76 years old.
