Today in Mambo: the first of two episodes devoted to the Puerto Rican musician Willie Rosario.
He was active as a composer, producer and percussionist, but is best known as a powerful bandleader of popular Cuban dance music. His orchestra served as a training ground for many well-known Latino musicians.
By the age of 16, Willie already had his own orchestra. Some time later he moved to New York City, where he worked with the orchestras of, among others, Noro Morales and Herbie Mann.
When ‘Latin boogaloo’ became popular in New York in the late 1960s, Willie paid it little heed. He had found his own musical form in an orchestral line-up that would remain characteristic for him: four trumpets and a baritone saxophone.
