Malian singer songwriter Rokia Traoré.
Today’s Mariama is entirely devoted to Malian singer Rokia Traoré. She recently released a new album: Beautiful Africa.
This is her fifth solo album and in this programme yuo can hear the musical development she has undergone in her 16-year long career.
Rokia Traoré is singer songwriter, born in Mali in 1974, as Bambara. She is from Kolokani in the north-west part of Mali. Her father was a diplomat, which meant she travelled a lot in her youth, and was exposed to many influences. Starting in 1997 she performed with Ali Farka Touré for a few years.
She managed to get the attention of an international audience from her very first CD, Mouneïsa, and in the present day she can be found on many stages around the world.
Rokia Traoré will soon perform in the Netherlands, on 6 March at Paradiso Amsterdam and on 9 March at the Oosterpoort in Groningen. Her concerts are always quite the experience.
