“Mariama”, a programme with African music. Nahawa Doumbia, Wassoulou singer from Mali.
The Wassoulou area in the south of Mali produced a interesting music style. It is the music of the youth, that in contrast with the traditional griots with their hymns and their greed for money often holds criticism of the established order. The Wassoulou music is based on an old tradition of hunting songs, with pentatonic melodies, and is traditionally accompanied by the "donso’n’goni" (hunting harp with six strings). Nahawa Doumbia’s first albums have been a mix between electric influences and pure Wassoulou. She returned to the acoustic "roots" of the Wassoulou music from her fourth album.
