“Mariama”, a programme with African music. Afro part 1.
In the late 60s, early 70s, a movement came to be in west Africa, especially in Nigeria and Ghana, called ‘afro’. Young people from the big cities were attracted to new sounds from the west, and at the same time returned to their early roots. A mixture of styles was the result: afro-beat, afro-rock and afro-funk. Many ideas were passed on such as that of the human rights movement in the US, and dressing styles of the hippies. And not to forget the accompanying hairstyle: the big afro haircuts. This lifestyle of the ‘rebellious youth’, where strong black consciousness was linked to an optimistic world view, was looked at by the upper class with a frowning gaze. Mariama provides a look at the music of this turbulent time.
