“Mariama”, a programme with African music. Afro, part 3.

End sixties, early seventies a movement arose in West Africa, especially in Nigeria and Ghana, that called itself ‘afro’. Young people from the big cities felt attracted to new sounds from the west and at the same time reverted to their old roots. A jumble of styles was produced: afro-beat, afro-rock and afro-funk. Ideas also blew over, like that of the human rights movement in the US and clothing styles from the hippies. And not to forget the matching long-hair styles: in this case afro-hair styles. This lifestyle of the ‘rebel youth’ in which a strong black consciousness was accompanied with an optimistic world view was viewed with a frown by the dominating class. Mariama provides an insight into the music of these turbulent times.
Mariama broadcasted part 1 and part 2 in January and February 2008. Now part 3 of these series, with a small selection of the flood of recent ‘afro’ releases.
