“Mariama”, a programme about African music. Highlife – part 2.
Highlife music is viewed as the independence music of the English speaking part of West Africa. It combines local styles like palmwine and juju with influences from jazz, bigband swing, calypso and rumba music. Especially in the fifties and sixties highlife was dance music for the well-to-do classes (people of the "high life") in the dazzling nightlife of the big cities, especially in Nigeria and Ghana. In this Mariama highlife from the 60s and 70s.
