In this episode again music from the Sahara: Desert blues II.
Toumast, which means identity, makes Toeareg rock. Guitarist Moussa Ag Kenya was originally the guitarist of Tinariwen, a well-known Touareg band. Together with his niece, singer Aminatou Goumar, they form Toumast. The debut album Ishumar is about the tough battle of the Sahara people against Niger and Mali. The Mauritanian singer Malouma Mint Meidah, also called Malouma raises a lot of controversy in her own country. Coming from an artistic, intellectual environment she is known as a militant singer and spokeswoman for, among other things, female rights in Islamic Mauritania. Hasna el Becharia is from Béchar, Algeria. She was the daughter of Gnawa musicians. Originally Gnawa has a mystical healing and mind-expanding effect. Hasna El Becharia soon learned how to play the guitar from her father but her true love was the guembri, a bass lute that in Algeria only can be played by men.
