“Mariama”, a programme with African music: Zani Diabaté & the Super Djata Band

Zani Diabaté passed away on 4 January after having been in a coma for a month following a heart attack. Zani Diabaté was born in 1947 in one of the most well-known griot families in west Africa. He was a musical jack-of-all-trades who joined Mali’s Ballet National in 1963. Six years later, he founded the Super Djata Band.
This group was very popular at the time and was on a level with bands such as the Super Railband de Bamako (with Salif Keita) and Super Biton and Les Ambassadeurs (with Mory Kante).
The Super Djata Band is one of Bamako’s oldest bands with an impressive career that has been going strong for over 40 years now.
Led by Zani Diabaté, Super Djata developed an entirely new, electric, almost psychedelic style, based on traditional rhythms of the Bambara hunters and fishermen.
