African music, compiled by Stan Rijven

During this first broadcast of 2021, we will focus on unique world-albums that were published last year. The range of these albums is compelling and richly varied, like hearing the world turn. While listening, you can make out four routes on this contemporary musical map of the world.

  1. The desire to pursue your own musical tradition in a new country, like Lebanese singer Lamia Yared, who reminisces on the Ottoman Empire’s musical heritage with “Chants des trois cours” in her new home country of Canada. Or, like the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, that keeps North-African/Andalusian traditions alive in the Netherlands. And, of course, Kadialy Kouyate: the sublime kora player who effortlessly unites Dakar with London.
  2. The role of outsiders, who give recordings by nearly forgotten performers a second life. For example, the record label Now-Again, who make old singles by Ethiopian blues singer Ayalew Mesfin into true gems again. Or, the exceptional Glitterbeat Records, who realised the reissue of Edikanfo’s fundamental highlife album “Nka bon” 40 years after its initial publication.
  3. Incorporating external musical influences from their own resources. Group RTD, the house band of Djibouti’s national radio broadcasting service, effortlessly incorporates reggae, disco and Bollywood in its repertoire. Even Ethiopian pentatonic scales can be turned into Nigerian guitar exercises, as Alhousseini Anivolla and Girum Mesmur demonstrate.
  1. Most striking is the permanent flow of fusion groups, consisting of 1st or 2nd generation migrants who make connections with local musicians in their new home country. You can call it fusion, mestizo, crossover, or whatever, but every time it results in exciting music that is more than the sum of its parts. Bab L’Bluz fuses Moroccan gnawa style with French dub reggae through the sintir. Siselabonga is a Senagalese/Swiss combination with a spectacular lead role for the kora. Zoufris Maracas effortlessly mixes Cape Verdian coladeira with Congolese soukous.

This selection was partly from our own collection and partly from compilations that the leading British world music magazine Songline publishes monthly. It has been around for 25 years and has been an inexhaustible source. Book a musical trip around the world, go to: https://www.songlines.co.uk
