Master – Companion

#4: Franz Liszt, the encounter between the master and his pupils. Franz Liszt was born on 22 October 1811 in Burgenland, the current border region between Hungary and Austria. He passed away in Bayreuth in 1886.
The family Liszt moved to Vienna in Franz’s childhood, where Liszt received piano lessons from Carl Czerny who had been a student of Ludwig van Beethoven himself. Liszt studied composition with Antonio Salieri, who was a teacher of Beethoven. In this period he met Beethoven and probably also Franz Schubert.

In the period of 1839 to 1847 Liszt swept Europe as piano virtuoso. The piano transcriptions of the many songs of Franz Schubert date from that time. He has made piano transcripts of as much as 55 songs of Schubert. he made for example a transcript of all the songs of Schwanengesang, the half of the songs of Winterreise, seven songs from Die schöne Müllerin and some loose songs. Except for the many songs and piano pieces that Liszt adapted he also adapted symphonies of Beethoven for piano solo. Therefore to conclude you can listen to the first two parts from the First Symphony of Beethoven for piano solo.
