Metamorfosen

Composers: Philip Glass | Traditional

Special Instruments.

On the fifth Friday of the month the series Metamorfosen Special Instruments is scheduled. After bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, double-string instruments, percussion and "tongue" instruments we will devote this episode and the next to an instrument that is distributed worldwide: the harp. Two episodes about one instrument. But your composer was not able to exclude the beautiful selection of the compilation album The art of Harp from harpist Rudiger Opperman. On this CD you will find samples of the harp in all its facets. We will make a trip around the world and we will listen to instruments that you have probably never heard of. We will start at what is probably the birth place of the instrument: East Africa, and in particular Ethiopia and Eritrea. That is where the traditional form of the instrument is being played, which we know from pictures of the Jewish King David. Spreaded through Africa we find more specific variations on the instrument on Madagascar and of course we also find the head instrument of the mandinga or griots, the Kora, in Africa. From Asia we bring a large selection as well, with sometimes completely forgotten or lesser known harp types. The Mongolian horse hair harp, the Chinese dulcimer harp and the -we’re being a little liberal here- blues harp from Birma. We know the koto from Japan and we conclude the first episode with a glimpse at part 2, that is about Western Europe and South and North America. Livinia Meijer concludes on the pedal harp with contemporary work by Philip Glass.
