Musica Maluku! Episode 14: Moluccan Moods Orchestra, live recordings.
Musica Maluku! is a series of broadcasts about the music of Maluku and Moluccans in the Netherlands. About folklore, sea songs, Islamic rituals, church choirs, war dances, indo rock and experimental pop.
This episode is devoted entirely to the Moluccan Moods Orchestra (MMO), a group that has a pioneering role within the Moluccan music scene in the Netherlands. In summer 1988, MMO made radio recordings for SFB Radio Berlin, after successful concerts on world music festival Heimatklänge. German label Pi’ranha was interested and released the recordings on the LP ‘Wakoi’ (Kind), (PIR 10) and later on CD (CD-27572). A part of the radio recordings made in the Netherlands over the years, were released in combination with the tracks of the first LP on CD ‘Sedjarah’ (PAN Records/RMP catalogue no. 168). This CD, which gives an overview of the group’s heyday, was sold out for a long time and was recently rereleased. (can be ordered at www.reinmusic.nl)
The Moluccan Moods Orchestra started out in 1987, as an orchestra for supplementing guest artists in a monthly concert series at Amsterdam pop temple Paradiso, titled ‘Moluccan Moods’.
As an independent group, the orchestra later turned the modernization of traditional Moluccan music into their trademark.
