We remember pianist and composer Misha Mengelberg, who passed away on 3 March 2017, with the double bass player of the ICP Orchestra, Ernst Glerum.
Ernst Glerum (1955) studied the classical double bass at the Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam. While still a student, he started playing with contemporary music ensembles, such as the ASKO ensemble, and improvising music groups like Curtic Clark, Hans Dulfer, JC Tans, and Theol Loevendie. With the Amsterdam String Trio and the Instant Composers Pool, he performed on many international stages. He often worked, alongside Han Bennink, with artists like Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Teddy Edwards, Benny Maupin, Jimmy Knepper, Jamaladeen Tacuma, John Zorn and Bud Shank and many more. As a composer/arranger, he initiates projects like the new Klookabilities (NOS Radio Jazz Festival and Universal Metropolitan Music. In 2004 he started his own recording label “Favorite”.
Apart from the Instant Composers Pool (with Mischa Mengelberg) and the Amsterdam STring Trio, he plays with Guus Janssen and Benjamin Herman. He regularly plays the piano in his own group “Omnibus”. He also teaches double bass at the Amsterdam Conservartoire.
