Interview with a Dutch jazz musician
In his teen years, Marius Beets played bass guitar in local pop and rock band in the eastern Dutch region the Achterhoek, where he grew up.
At home, he often came into contact with jazz. He studied the double bass at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, after which he started, and continues to play with the Houdini’s, het Hoogendijk/van den Dungen 5-tet and– with his brothers, Peter on the piano, and Alexander on tenor sax – the Beets Brothers. He also accompanied Rita Reys, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Rein de Graaff and Piet Noordijk, but also international artists like Johnny Griffin, James Moody and Bud Shank. He has contributed to over a hundred CDs and played as a guest with the Metropole Orkest, Amsterdam Sinfoniette, Schönberg-ensemble, Brabants Orkest, Skymasters and Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw. Marius teaches double bass jazz since 1999 at the Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatoire.
Since 2003, Marius has his own studio and specializes in recording acoustic jazz. In 2006, he released his first album under his own name: Marius Beets & the Powerhouse Big Band, for which he wrote all the pieces and arrangements. Late 2007, he releases another album, also filled exclusively with his own work and on which he is supported by an American line up.
