Interview with a Dutch jazz musician: Ben van Gelder
Ben van Gelder (1989, Groningen) was raised in a music loving family. In 2006 he moved to New York to study music at the New School University and was taught by i.a. Lee Konitz and Mark Turner. From 2007, Ben has been band leader of his own group with which he often plays at the Jazz Gallery, a place where countless important contemporary improvisers come to perform. He has shared the stage with musicians such as David Binney, Ambrose Akinmusire, Mark Turner, Ben Street and Rodney Green.
Over the last few years Ben has been awarded various prizes and subsidies, and on top of that he was awarded the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown fellowship, a prestigious American grant.
Ben also plays in a number of Dutch bands, such as the David Kweksilber Big Band and a duo with Reinier Baas.
