Two unflappable women
Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (1952–2023) and Greek composer Calliope Tsoupaki (1963, pictured) have never felt compelled to follow prevailing musical fashions or shifting aesthetic trends. Their independence has given rise to highly distinctive musical voices, instantly recognisable and internationally acclaimed.
This edition of Contemporary Music features two works. From Saariaho, we hear Evening Prayer, a song set to a poem by Eino Leino. From Tsoupaki comes the impressive string quartet Tryptichon, in which the players are joined by a clarinettist in the central movement.
