Nuove Musiche

thu 31 jul 2025 19:00 hrs

Today, two recently released recordings of music from Germany of the late 16th and 17th century.

The first CD is the second episode in a series of recordings with music composed in the Hanseatic cities in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Hanseatic League was an alliance of trading towns in Central and Northern Europe. This episode focuses on Danzig, now Gdańsk in Poland. Although the city was under Polish rule, culturally it was entirely German and Lutheran. The bandmasters and organists who worked here in the 16th and 17th centuries, were almost all German. Fun fact: the first composer whose piece we will hear, Johann Wanning, was born in Kampen.

Johann Wanning (1537-1603)

Nicolaus Zangius (c1570-1619)

5. Pax aeterna a 10

(cd: “Musik aus dem alten Danzig” – CPO 555 647-2, 2024)

The second CD also features music by German composers, even though there is also an Italian, which documents that the style of composing changed under Italian influence during the 17th century, much to the displeasure of old Heinrich Schütz. Most of the pieces on the CD of the Kirchheimer Dübenconsort are composed in his style. All works are premieres.
