It was a very busy musical year, not only in opera but also in literature. The French author Henri Bergson was awarded the Nobel prize in literature. The librettos also were very high-quality most of the time.
Erich Korngold was the only one who had a hard time with his latest opera ‘Das Wunder der Heliane’. American composer and journalist Deems Taylor put himself on the shortlist of the Metropolitan for a new production and got the job. And a great succes it was! Franz Léhar plunged into the history of tsar Peter the Great and his family with ‘Der Zarewitsch’. In short, a fascinating year in the land of opera.
