Selda – Vurulduk Ey Halkim, Unutma Bizi (1976)
Selda Bagcan, also known as the ‘Turkish Joan Baez’, is the best known protest singer from Turkey.In the early seventies she released a few singles and got the chance to record an LP in 1976, in spite of the strict censorship of the time.The recording session was such a success that they recorded two albums straightaway. The first one contains the louder songs and the second one, that we will play today, more modest songs.This is the record ‘Vurulduk Ey Halkim, Unutma Bizi’ from 1976. The title of the record means: ‘we have been brought down, my people, don’t forget us’. Selda has been known, apart form her beautiful voice, for her socially-criticizing lyrics in which she passionately wishes for a better world. She wasn’t thanked for that criticism by the Turkish government. If all the punishments would have been executed she would have to serve another500 years in prison. From 1980 till 1992 she was banned from the Turkish broadcasting station TRT. The Turkish government has thwarted Selda in many other ways, for example by withholding an exit visa.
