The Fairies: An English Opera Setting of Persian Poetry by Ahmad Shamlu, Sheida Gharachedaghi.
Slavery, captivity and freedom are the main features of a libretto that unfolds like a sequence of poems. At first glance, the work looks more like oratorio than opera, but with lyrics like ‘everyone is singing and dancing – this is a real opportunity for people’, ‘darkness gone, devils die!’, ‘hand in hand we will all building – free and happy, a new world’, it is not difficult to understand why this work has been banned in Iran for three decades.
