The Indian chants in Sanskrit have been put on record and CD so many times, in both traditional and more modern interpretations, that it seems an impossible task for each subsequent artist to add something new to the performance of the chants. But for someone like Ravi Shankar, the heavens of innovation seem to open more easily than for many other benevolent musicians. Ravi Shankar re-set a number of Sanskrit mantras and couplets to music and composed four of his own hymns in a matching style. The result is breathtaking: a CD full of hypnotic religious songs, soothing and inspiring at the same time.
