Folk music : Joce Mienniel, Mari Boine and Vladikmir Vossotski, producer: Cobie Ivens

I
. Joce Mieniel. (25:08 min)
The talented flutist Joce Mienniel has been a growing force in the music world for years. Passionate about traditional music, his aim with the album Babel is not to return to a specific style or language, but to blur and push boundaries. What he has chosen here is a universe akin to the sounds of the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean. Joce Mienniel is surrounded by his regular musicians on percussion, mandol, bendir, daf, double bass and guests from Pakistan and Syria on sitar, ud and quanoun.

II. Mari Boine. (23:32 min)
It’s not just the fjords, reindeer fields and the Northern Lights that drive Mari Boine’s compositions. As a Sami activist singing in her native language, Mari Boine always dares to push the boundaries of clichés. On her ninth solo album, Sterna Paradisea, she traveled to South Africa for inspiration and collaborations. Recorded in Cape Town, the album features guest appearances by legendary South African stars: singer Madosini Latozi Mpahleni and the a cappella ensemble Abaqondisi Brothers. The album is a mix of classical folk guitar, choir sounds, pop, trip-hop and a touch of jazz from trumpeter Ole Jørn Myklebust, who co-produced the album with bassist Svein Schultz.

III. Vladimir Vissotski. (10:46 min)
For the last six months of his life, Vladimir Vysotsky appeared sporadically on stage, fueled by heavy doses of drugs and alcohol. His performances were often erratic. Vladimir made occasional visits to the emergency room but rejected Marina Vlady’s suggestions that he undergo a lengthy rehabilitation course at a Western clinic. Nevertheless, he continued to write, primarily poetry and even prose, but also songs. The last song he sang was the heartbreaking My Sorrow, and his final poem, written a week before his death, was A Letter to Marina: “I’m not yet fifty, but time is short / Protected by you and God, alive and well / I have a song or two to sing to the Lord / I have a way to make peace with him.”
CD. Wir drehen die Erde – Vladimir Vissotski.
LABEL: Pläne (1988), code: CD 88605. VIDEO
