Since the start of the 70s, The Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) is a collective of experimental musicians from Los Angeles. Key figures of the collective are Joe Potts, Tom Recchion, Joseph Hammer, John Duncan, Dennis Duck, Juan Gomez, Kevin Laffey, Chip Chapman, Fredrik Nilsen, Jerry Bishop, Ace Farren Ford, Ju Suk Reet Meate and Rick Potts. The most important bands are Le Forte Four, Smegma, Solid Eye, Airway, Monique Experience, Foundation Boo, Extended Organ and The Doo-Dooettes. They were influenced by among others John Cage, The Residents, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and free jazz. They themselves influenced other bands in California, like Caroliner Rainbow, Sun City Girls and The Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. They also influenced Japanese noise bands like Hanatarash, Hijokaidan and Incapacitants. This influence consists of a very playful way to approach making music, which originated from the fact that they thought the existing rock music was too boring, too predictable and too smooth. They were improvising more than the standard rock bands, experimented more and used a do-it-yourself method.
