Jazz, blues and nostalgia. This time, with female singers from the ‘cool school’.
The ‘cool school’ was the vocal trend which was blended into jazz and vogue under the influence of the cool playing musicians like Miles Davis and Chet Baker. If music would have a colour, cool jazz would be in pastel colours. It was a reaction to the explosiveness of ‘hot jazz’ and the nervousness of bebop. The key word of ‘cool jazz’ is subtlety. Three important singers in this genre were from the band of Stan Kenton: Anita O’Day, June Christy and Chris Connor. The latter had a style which was distinguished by sensuality and by leaving out all sorts of things. ‘The simpler it is, the better it works for me.’ In this hour, works of these three vocalists, but also Riedel van Kleef, from the Netherlands.
